The Internet of Things (IoT)
Internet of Things (IoT) – this is an every-growing ‘buzz-word’ these days, but what exactly do we mean by the Internet of Things? And how ‘real’ is it? How does it link in with other emerging technologies like Cloud Computing, and Smartphones and how are they impacting on our daily lives. Who better than one of the early pioneers of IoT – someone who was linking “embedded devices” to the Internet back in the historic 1990’s!
Network data growth is being driven by the huge new markets for smartphones & tables. The disruptive effects of these devices have impacted in various ways – one of the most interesting stories being that of energy consumption by our gadgets (out of charge again??). We’ll take a look at some recent trends and discuss if the madness of the smartphone era is going to subside anytime soon.
Cloud computing – what exactly is it and what does it mean for me? As a member of the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing and author of several recent articles on the synergies between consumer devices and “the Cloud” your presenter is in a good position to provide some interesting insights on “the Cloud”, what it is and how it is already impacting on your daily living.
Finally, we meet the scary side of the Internet of Things; we’ll look at wearable technology, sousveilance, the loss of personal privacy and, scariest of all, we’ll meet “Mother and the Motion Cookies”!
